Prevention

Prevention is always the better option to cure and in equine care there are several ways to help prevent your horse from developing serious vertebral subluxation complexes.

  • Confirmation and build - many breeds have been selectively bred for certain disciplines in relation to their length, width, height and strength. The analogy of using a Ferrari to pull a trailer will illustrate how using certain breeds for a discipline they're not particularly built for, can predispose the animal to undue strain.
  • Massage - this is very useful in increasing circulation and reducing fibre adhesions and scar tissue thus improving muscle health.
  • Training - warm up procedures, interval training and variety in training will all help to develop strength in the spine to cope with the demands the horse is placed under.
  • Equipment and saddle - correct saddle fit is vital for a well functioning spine. Check it regularly to see if the flocking is worn or if there is any general excess wearing. A correctly fitting saddle does not require a thick padded saddle cloth or additional pads.
  • Shoes and hoof care - no hoof, no horse is the old saying. It is practically impossible for a poorly shod horse to have or maintain a correctly functioning spine. Your horse should be regularly and correctly shod or trimmed.
  • Environment - A sport horse kept in stables with limited space to move about and without enough turnout will suffer deteriorating coordination the longer freedom of movement is limited. Its natural balance will suffer, leading to an increased risk of injury. Allow your horse to regularly exercise, bucking and rolling are its natural means of stretching the spine.
